I use TVPlayer regularly for the FREE channels and there is quite a good choice to choose from. The APP is available on both Android and iOS and make it very easy for me to watch from anywhere.

I installed this on my Fire TV2 and it seems to work ok; it loaded up several different channels in a couple of seconds, but did stall on another – I don’t know whether that was the fault of the channel or the app though?

Selecting BBC1 and NHK delivered very high quality streams, possibly even HD quality! I’ve tried several other channels too, but those really stood out as being of really good quality.

There are a lot of free channels to choose from, many of which are available on Freeview; there are also some channels which require a subscription – One of the things that was slightly annoying is that all of these channels are lumped together in the channel guide. if they were separated out, it would be much tidier for the (non-subscribing) user. I also noticed that when selecting a free channel, there was a two second splash advert for the subscription channels, although it is only on screen for a couple of seconds, I imagine this would get annoying if you were channel-hopping!

Aside from the free and subscription channels being jumbled together, I did like the channel guide – it is very simple to navigate, though does return you to the start of the guide when you stop watching a channel, as opposed to returning you to where you were.

This is an ok app on the Fire TV2 – it does what it sets out to do quite well, I’m not really sure there’s much of a benefit to having this app of your TV already has a Freeview tuner and you have a functioning aerial? However if you do not have an aerial and you want some of the Freeview channels, this will probably do you just fine! I imagine this app would be really useful installed on a tablet or mobile phone, depending of course on you having access to free Wi-Fi or an unlimited data plan – it should be very useful when out and about!
